Nathaniel Tatum was born in 1599. He was christened Nov 18 1599 at Holy Trinity the Less Church in London, England. He was the son of William Tatum and Ellen Kirk who married on 3 Aug 1587 at St. Benet Grace Church in London. His parents must have died when he was young because he was on a list at Bridewell Royal Hospital records, 27 Feb 1618/19 of 75 boys and 25 girls who were to go to Virginia. These children were 8-16 years old and had been found "running wild in the streets" of London, "sleeping under stalls", and begging and had been committed to Bridewell, which served as a house of correction. They were mainly homeless though some were probably petty pilferers. One of the ships that brought these children to Virginia was the "George" which left London March 1618/1619 and arrived in Virginia in May 1619. The muster list of the Inhabitants of the neck of land in Charles Cittie in VA, Feb 24, 1624 includes "Nathaniell Tatam, aged 20 years, arrived in the "George", May 1619." In Feb 1623 Nathaniel was listed as living in the West and Shirley Hundred and at Shirley Hundred, Charles City, in the muster, 22 Jan 1624/5. He was listed as 20 years old and having come to Virginia in 1619 on the "George." Muster of the Inhabitants of the neck of land in Charles Cittie in VA, Feb 24, 1624: (list includes) "Nathaniell Tatam, aged 20 years, in the "George", May 1619." In 1624 when he was 25 years old, Nathaniel moved from the north side of the James River to the south side. His wife was named Ann. When he was 39 years old, Nathaniel patented 100 acres of land in Charles City Co on Appomattox River 25 July 1638 for transporting his wife Ann and his daughter Mary Tatum. An Act of Assembly of 6 Jan. 1639/40 named Nathaniel Tatum, Cheney Boyce, and Anthony Wyatt as a "Viewers of Tobacco" for Charles City for the north side of Appomattox River. 10 Oct 1639 Charles City Co VA. Thomas Causey of Martins Hundred sold to Nathaniell Tatum of Apamattuck River 500 acres as by patent dated 14 Jul 1637. Witnesses: Richard Webster & Walter Childs. 10 Oct 1639 Charles City Co., VA. Edward Prince, 500a Adjoining Nat. Tatum with Prince's land running up the falls. 6 Jan 1639/40 Charles City Co VA. An Act of Assembly named Nathaniel Tatum as a tobacco viewer for the north side of Appomattox River. 4 Dec 1641 Charles City Co VA. Nathaniel Tatum repatented the 500 acres from Thomas Causey. 5 Nov 1649 Charles City Co VA. Walter Chiles, Gent., 813 acres on Sly. side of Appomattuck River bounded by the river and a run of water bordering Nath. Tatum, Mr. Tunstalls land and the river. 23 Jan 1653 Charles City Co VA. Col. Francis Epps, Esq., 280 acres on south side of James River & south side of Appamattock River, bounded by Capt. Batts, Walter Brookes, Natha. Tatum, John Bakers land, and his own 1700 acres. Ann died before April 26, 1684 because a land patent of that date, for 150 acres in Isle of Wright County to Mr. Thomas Pitt, described the land as that which "Ann Tatum died seized of". 12 Mar 1654 Charles City Co VA. Walter Brookes, 460 acres in Bristol Parish bordering land of Nath. Tatum & John Baker. 160 acres purchased by John Howell of Nath Tatum, Sr., and sold to said Brookes, & 300 acres for transp. of six people. 18 Mar 1662 Charles City Co VA. Walter Brookes, 460 acres of which 300 acres ran east along the head of Nath. Tatum & head of John Bakers land. John Coleman, 813 acres, bordering Na: Tatum & Mr. Tunstall. 17 Feb 1663 Charles City Co VA. Col. Fra. Epps renewed his patent of 280 acres (23 Jan 1653). 25 Mar 1663 Charles City Co VA. Lt. John Howell 212a W by N on Nathaniel Tatum's land. For transp. of 5 persons: Marma. Young, Edw. Sands, Tho. Cartwright, Jno Harmar, Maty Finch. 18 Aug 1669 Charles City Co VA. Jno.
