Canaan Primitive Baptist Church was established before the Civil War and abandoned during the 1930's. The church no longer stands but the cemetery still exists. There are many pioneer families buried in Canaan along with a section for slaves and it has been said it was an Indian burial spot prior to it becoming Canaan Church. It was the center of gatherings of the community. Services were held once a month on a successive Saturday and Sunday. A three day meeting and dinner was held on the grounds once a year.
Jesse Berryman Robinson II and his wife, Helen Cox Robinson joined this church soon after marrying and moving to Lee Co, AL. Jesse later exchanged land with his neighbor, John Allen, to enlarge the Robinson plot in the cemetery. Those of my family that are buried there are:
